Nakshatra Compatibility for Marriage

Where the Moon sat at your birth decides most of a traditional match — and no nakshatra is simply “best”.

Short answer: A nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the zodiac, 13°20′ wide, split into 4 padas of 3°20′. Matching is anchored on the Moon’s nakshatra, and four of the eight koots of Ashtakoot Milan come from it: Tara (3), Yoni (4), Gana (6) and Nadi (8) — 21 of the 36 points. Each compares two people, so it needs both charts. No nakshatra is best in the abstract.

What a nakshatra actually is

The zodiac is a circle of 360 degrees, which both traditions cut into 12 signs of 30 degrees. Vedic astrology cuts it a second way as well, into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each — 27 times 13°20′ is exactly 360.

Each nakshatra divides again into 4 padas of 3°20′, giving 108 padas in all. Nakshatras and signs do not line up: one can straddle two signs, and a sign holds two and a quarter nakshatras. It is a finer grid — a twenty-seventh of the sky where a sign is a twelfth.

Why the Moon’s nakshatra is the anchor

Every planet sits in a nakshatra, but “my nakshatra” means the one the Moon held at birth — the janma nakshatra. Classical practice treats the Moon as the mind — temperament, instinct, whether a person settles — and compatibility here is a question about minds together. It is also the fastest body in the chart, covering about one nakshatra a day, so its position is specific to a birth. It starts the 120-year Vimshottari dasha cycle too, behind marriage timing.

The four koots from the nakshatra

Ashtakoot Milan — the 36-point system — has eight koots. Four are read from the Moon’s nakshatra, and they carry 21 of the 36 points.

KootPointsWhat it tests
Tara3Counted distance between the nakshatras, both ways.
Yoni4Animal symbols compared for instinctive fit.
Gana6Temperament — deva, manushya or rakshasa.
Nadi8Constitutional type — adi, madhya or antya.

The other four come from the Moon sign — Varna, Vashya, Bhakoot — and Graha Maitri from its lord; all eight are in the kundali milan explainer. Notice the points are uneven — Nadi alone is worth 8, twice Yoni, while Tara is worth 3. The figure out of 36 is a weighted sum, not a tally of passes.

Nadi dosha, honestly

Nadi is the heaviest koot, so here it is straight. Each nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis, corresponding roughly to the three constitutional types of Ayurveda. When both people fall in the same nadi the koot scores zero out of eight, and that zero is Nadi dosha. The reasoning in the texts is constitutional, not moral: two people of one type are held to reinforce the same imbalance, read as a concern for health and children rather than for affection. It is also the koot most likely to sink a good score, because eight points is a large share of thirty-six — which is why the exceptions matter as much as the rule, and they are part of the tradition, not modern softening:

Lineages apply these differently; reporting Nadi dosha without checking them is half the work.

The “best nakshatra for marriage” myth

This is among the most searched questions on the subject, and it does not fit the method. Nakshatra matching is relational: Tara counts the distance between two nakshatras, Yoni compares two animal symbols, Gana two temperaments, Nadi two types. None reads a nakshatra alone.

So the same nakshatra scores excellently against one partner and poorly against another: a hostile Yoni pair with one, a friendly one with the next; Nadi dosha against part of the zodiac, nothing against the rest. Ranking nakshatras for marriage is like ranking chess openings without naming the reply.

Why two sites give you different nakshatras

Ayanamsa. The sidereal zodiac is offset from the tropical one, and the offset differs by school. Lahiri, Raman and KP values are close but not identical — fractions of a degree apart, enough to move a Moon near a boundary into the next nakshatra.

Birth time. The Moon covers about one nakshatra a day, a pada every six hours. A time to the nearest hour is usually fine for the nakshatra, shaky for the pada; a family guess can miss both.

So check which ayanamsa each result used before comparing them. MilanYog uses the Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri ayanamsa, and should flag a Moon sitting close to a boundary rather than pick a side silently.

A real match needs both charts

You cannot compute nakshatra compatibility from one birth chart. Tara needs two nakshatras to count between; Yoni two animals, Gana two temperaments, Nadi two types. One chart gives your own Moon nakshatra and pada — the start of your dasha sequence — but no part of a match.

MilanYog today reads one chart only. The reading it produces is single-chart: no two-chart guna matching, no Ashtakoot calculator, and nothing here will score you out of 36. If that is what you came for, the kundali milan explainer sets out how the system works and what the score bands conventionally mean — enough to read someone else’s report without being at its mercy.

Questions people ask

Which nakshatra is best for marriage?

None, and the question does not fit the system. Nakshatra matching is relational: it scores two Moon nakshatras against each other, so one nakshatra pairs well with some and badly with others.

Which koots of Ashtakoot Milan come from the nakshatra?

Four of the eight: Tara worth 3 points, Yoni 4, Gana 6 and Nadi 8. Together they carry 21 of the 36 points, which is why the nakshatra is called the anchor of matching.

Why do two websites show different nakshatras for the same birth?

Usually ayanamsa or birth time. Lahiri, Raman and KP values differ by fractions of a degree, enough to move a Moon near a nakshatra boundary. And the Moon covers one nakshatra a day, so an uncertain time can land it in the next division.

Can nakshatra compatibility be checked from one chart?

No. Every koot compares one person’s Moon nakshatra against the other’s, so both birth details are needed. MilanYog today reads one chart only and does not offer two-chart guna matching, so it cannot score you out of 36.
