Half of India worries about this word. Here is what it means, what it does not mean, and the cancellations nobody mentions.
Manglik meaning: a person is Manglik when their birth chart has Mars (Mangal) in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the ascendant. The placement is called Manglik dosh, Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha. It is read as extra heat and friction in married life — not as a ban on marriage — and most Manglik charts also carry a classical cancellation.

Manglik dosh kya hota hai? — Kundli mein Mangal agar lagna se 1, 4, 7, 8 ya 12ve bhav mein ho, to use Manglik dosh kehte hain. Iska matlab shaadi mein zyada garmi aur takraav hai, shaadi par rok nahi. Poori jaankari Hindi mein: मांगलिक दोष — लक्षण, काट और उपाय.
Mars is a planet of heat, drive and friction. The houses in question all touch marriage or the body: the 1st is you, the 4th your home life, the 7th the marriage itself, the 8th longevity and shared resources, the 12th the bed and private life. Mars in any of them is read as bringing sharpness into married life — more heat in arguments, more force in how you assert yourself with a partner.

Five houses or six?
MilanYog, like most North Indian astrologers, counts the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. South Indian practice usually adds the 2nd house (family and speech). If your Mars is in the 2nd, our Manglik calculator says so plainly instead of hiding it behind a yes or no.
This is where much of the fear comes from: with three reference points and five or six houses each, almost any chart shows Manglik under some reckoning. A chart that is Manglik from the ascendant and the Moon is a different matter from one that shows up in only one.
| Common claim | What the tradition actually says |
|---|---|
| “Mars there adds heat to marriage” | This part is the actual tradition, and it is worth knowing |
| “Manglik means no marriage” | No. It is read as friction and sometimes delay, not denial |
| “Manglik means harm to the spouse” | A fear reading of the 8th house, not a classical conclusion |
| “You cannot marry a non-Manglik” | Not supported once a cancellation applies, which is common |
| “Only an expensive puja fixes it” | Check the cancellations first. Most people do not need anything |
Only from the birth chart. Date, time and place of birth decide where Mars sits — nothing else does. Temperament, looks or behaviour cannot tell you whether someone is Manglik, and judging a person (very often a woman) that way is both unreliable and unfair. If you want to know, check the chart.
These are not modern softenings. They are in the classical literature alongside the rule itself.
The pattern worth noticing
The dosh rule is easy to check and easy to sell. The cancellation list takes real chart work and usually ends the conversation. If someone tells you that you are Manglik and does not immediately tell you which cancellations apply in your chart, they have given you half a reading.
The free Manglik calculator finds your Mars from your birth details using the Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri ayanamsa, checks it from the ascendant and the Moon, and runs through the cancellations one chart can settle. The full MilanYog reading goes further: marriage timing, your partner, and every cancellation in context.

A chart with Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. It is read as extra heat in married life, not as a ban on marriage.
Not before you check the cancellations. Ask which ones apply to your chart. If the person who told you cannot answer that, get a second reading.
Yes, and it happens constantly. If a cancellation is present, or the rest of both charts sits well together, most practising astrologers treat the pairing as workable.
It is one of the traditional cancellations, on the reasoning that Mars’s intensity settles with maturity. Treat it as one factor among several, not a switch.
Check for a cancellation first. If one applies, there is not much to remedy. If none does, remedies exist — but nobody should sell you an expensive ritual without first showing you the exact placement it is meant to address.
