The planet of attraction in the house of the spouse: the most quoted marriage placement, and the most over-read.
Short answer: Venus is the natural karaka (significator) of marriage, so Venus in the 7th puts the marriage planet inside the marriage house. It reads as strong attraction, a refined and comfort-loving partner, and a marriage formed earlier or more easily than average. It is no guarantee of marriage or of happiness — the sign Venus occupies, its strength, the 7th lord and the running dasha all change it.
The 7th house sits directly opposite the 1st. The 1st is you; the 7th is the mirror — the other person. It carries marriage, the spouse and partnership. Three things are read together: the sign on the 7th, the planets in it, and where that sign's ruler has gone. Venus in the 7th answers only the middle one. The timing method is in when will I get married.
Venus — Shukra — signifies attraction, beauty, comfort and refinement, and in the classical texts the wife in a man's chart; Jupiter holds that role for the husband in a woman's. Its subject matter is the 7th house's, so a karaka in the house of its own affairs makes the topic loud in the life. Commentators also held a karaka can damage its own house: read amplification, not ease.
Attraction tends to be immediate and visual, and interest in partnership starts early. The classical line is early or easy marriage; in practice the opportunity arrives readily, and whether one converts is decided by the dasha and the 7th lord. The partner is described as caring how things look and feel — appearance, home, comfort — and as socially agreeable, often conflict-averse: pleasant preferred over honest. More on that side in what will my future partner look like.
One placement, twelve meanings: the 7th takes a different sign for every ascendant.
| Element in 7th | Signs on the 7th | What Venus there shifts |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Fast, declared attraction; pride in the partner. Can form quickly, needs maintenance after. |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Practical, security-led. Taurus is Venus's own sign: slow, durable. Virgo is its debilitation. Capricorn, formal and status-aware. |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Attraction through conversation and social circle. Libra is Venus's own sign: charming, indecisive. Aquarius, unconventional. |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Emotional depth and attachment. Pisces is Venus's exaltation. Cancer ties it to family; Scorpio adds intensity. |
So Venus in the 7th is exalted only for a Virgo ascendant and debilitated only for a Pisces ascendant — the same four words for its strongest and weakest form. A reading that does not name your ascendant is not reading your chart.
Venus never travels far from the Sun — maximum elongation is roughly 47 degrees. Very close to the Sun in longitude it is combust (asta); the orb differs by text, commonly around 10 degrees. A combust Venus in the 7th reads as a drowned-out significator.
Venus retrogrades roughly 40 days about every 19 months. In the 7th it reads as the marriage theme arriving out of sequence — someone from the past returning, or a long gap between wanting and acting. Some traditions read retrograde as strengthening instead.
For a Pisces ascendant the 7th is Virgo, where Venus is debilitated. That does not cancel marriage; it moves the reading from easy attraction to scrutiny — high standards, finding the flaw. Two things then matter: Mercury, ruling Virgo, and any neecha bhanga (cancelled debilitation).
The honest limits
Venus in the 7th promises neither a marriage nor a happy one, and it never names a person — no chart yields a name or a face, only tendencies you recognise afterwards.
It is one factor among several: a textbook-strong Venus in the 7th with the 7th lord in the 12th, a weak Navamsa and no supporting dasha underdelivers against a plain chart where all three agree.
A placement says what; the Vimshottari dasha says when. It shares a 120-year cycle among nine planets, and Venus holds the largest slice: a Venus mahadasha runs 20 years. Inside it the same nine run again as antardashas, each taking the proportion it holds of the 120 years — so Venus–Venus is 3 years 4 months (20 × 20 ÷ 120) and Venus–Jupiter 2 years 8 months (16 × 20 ÷ 120). Arithmetic, identical in every chart. Periods to watch:
That is a candidate window. It turns strong only when the D9 Navamsa agrees and a slow transit — Jupiter or Saturn crossing the 7th or the natal Moon — falls inside it. With a Mars-based concern, run the Manglik check before assuming a Venus period is blocked.
Birth time decides all of it: the ascendant moves a degree every four minutes, so a 20-minute error can move your ascendant sign — which moves the 7th house and can remove Venus from it. No. It is a strong marriage significator in the marriage house, so partnership usually matters early. But it guarantees nothing: the 7th lord, the running dasha and the D9 Navamsa have to agree first.
Classically, a partner who cares about appearance, comfort and harmony. The sign Venus occupies narrows this far more than the house alone, and a chart never names a person.
Venus is debilitated in Virgo, so this applies only to a Pisces ascendant. It does not cancel marriage; it shifts the reading towards analysis and high standards.
Usually in a Venus mahadasha, a Venus antardasha inside another one, or the 7th lord's period. Venus mahadasha runs 20 years; Venus–Venus inside it is 3 years 4 months. Windows, not dates.
